Particle-tracking simulations of anomalous transport in hierarchically fractured rocks

چکیده
Complex topology of fracture networks and interactions between transport processes in a fracture and the ambient un-fractured rock (matrix) combine to render modeling solute transport in fractured media a challenge. Classical approaches rely on both strong assumptions of either limited or full diffusion of solutes in the matrix and simplified fracture configurations. We analyze fracture-matrix transport in two-dimensional Sierpinski lattice structures, which display a wide range of matrix block sizes. The analysis is conducted in several transport regimes that are limited by either diffusion or block sizes. Our simulation results can be used to validate the simplifying assumptions that underpin classical analytical solutions and to benchmark other numerical methods. They also demonstrate that both hydraulic and structural properties of fractured rocks control the residence time distribution. & 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A CTRW approach to normal and anomalous reaction–diffusion processes
We study the dynamics of a radioactive species flowing through a porous material, within the Continuous-Time Random Walk (CTRW) approach to the modelling of stochastic transport processes. Emphasis is given to the case where radioactive decay is coupled to anomalous diffusion in locally heterogeneous media, such as porous sediments or fractured rocks. In this framework, we derive the distributi...
متن کاملCoupling Geomechanics and Transport in Naturally Fractured Reservoirs
Large amounts of hydrocarbon reserves are trapped in naturally fractured reservoirs which arechallenging in terms of accurate recovery prediction because of their joint fabric complexity andlithological heterogeneity. Canada, for example, has over 400 billion barrels of crude oil in fracturedcarbonates in Alberta, most of this being bitumen of viscosity greater than 106 cP in the GrosmontFormat...
متن کاملMachine learning for graph-based representations of three-dimensional discrete fracture networks
Structural and topological information play a key role in modeling of flow through fractured rock. Discrete fracture network (DFN) computational suites such as dfnWorks [23] are designed to simulate flow and transport in such media. Transport calculations that use a particle tracking method reveal that a small backbone of fractures exists where most transport occurs providing a significant redu...
متن کاملTransport of conservative solutes in simulated fracture networks: 1. Synthetic data generation
[1] This paper investigates whether particle ensembles in a fractured rock domain may be adequately modeled as an operator-stable plume. If this statistical model applies to transport in fractured media, then an ensemble plume in a fractured rock domain may be modeled using the novel Fokker-Planck evolution equation of the operator-stable plume. These plumes (which include the classical multi-G...
متن کاملFRACK: A Freeware Flow and Transport Suite for Fractured Media
FRACK is a fractured media freeware flow and solute transport suite currently under development that is intended to serve as both a preand post-processor to MODFLOW. As a pre-processor, FRACK generates and maps networks of deterministic and/or stochastic fractures onto a regularly-spaced finitedifference grid, according to a fracture continuum method that closely approximates flow solutions to ...
